While aerodynamics were paramount in the development of the Tarmac, and in the development of all our race bikes, weight was our passenger on the journey to the optimal race bike. Previously, "aero bikes" had always compromised on weight - the more the drag was reduced, the more the weight was increased. With the new Tarmac, our design philosophy was to keep it at or below the UCI weight limit, without any compromise in aerodynamics. With the help of the FreeFoil Shape Library, tools like FEA isotope analysis, and some engineering wizardry from some of the best engineers in the business, we delivered a frame that weighs just 920 grams without giving up a gram of aero, stiffness, or ride quality.
Continuing our quest to develop the ultimate race bike, we've followed our Rider-First Engineered™ philosophy to ensure that the new Tarmac will be the most balanced and best handling Tarmac of its time - regardless of size. With the world's best test riders from our three World Tour teams - Boels-Dolmans, Deceuninck-Quick-Step and Bora-hansgrohe - we made changes to the Tarmac based on their thousands of kilometres on the road. We've balanced the ride quality so that even the longest days in the saddle remain comfortable - all without taking anything away from the Tarmac's legendary handling and agility that make it a race winner.
Building on insights from the Venge, the new Tarmac uses simple integration to create a clean, fast cockpit that's easy to live with. We've improved routing for any configuration - mechanical shifting, traditional shifters, round handlebars, etc - all while maintaining its aerodynamic characteristics. These same features also make the new Tarmac easy to ride and easy to handle. It's a win-win for everyone.
